One of the first questions families ask when we start planning a photo session is where we should take the photos. Parks are always a beautiful option, and there are plenty of great ones around Indianapolis, but every once in a while it’s fun to choose a location that brings a little more personality to the session. That’s exactly what we did with the Lee family this year.

I’ve been photographing this crew for several years now, and one of my favorite things about working with them is that they’re always willing to try something a little different. Kayla has an incredible eye for styling everyone in a way that feels cohesive but still playful, and every year we brainstorm a session idea that feels fresh and unique compared to the last one.

This time the vision was simple: funky, colorful, and a little bit editorial. When you’re going for that kind of vibe, its important to really seek out the most unique photo locations in Indianapolis. Flower Alley in Broad Ripple is pretty much the perfect place to start.

Tucked into the Broad Ripple neighborhood on the north side of Indianapolis, Flower Alley is one of those spots that feels like a hidden outdoor art gallery. The walls are covered in large-scale floral murals painted across garages and buildings, with oversized flowers and bright colors stretching down the entire alley. It’s bold, vibrant, and completely different from the natural green spaces people usually picture for family photos. That contrast is exactly what makes it such a fun place to photograph.

Instead of soft neutral backgrounds, every wall adds another layer of color and personality. One mural might feature giant daisies, while the next bursts with bright pinks, blues, and yellows that feel almost retro in style. As you move down the alley, the scenery changes constantly, which gives us an incredible amount of variety within just a short walking distance.

A Funky Editorial Family Session with the Lee Family

When Kayla described their family vibe in the questionnaire, she used three words: fun, happy, crazy. That description turned out to be extremely accurate.

The Lee family showed up fully ready to lean into the playful energy of Flower Alley. Kayla styled everyone perfectly for the setting, with retro-inspired colors that popped against the murals without clashing with them. The whole look felt vibrant, relaxed, and just a little bit editorial. Instead of focusing on traditional posed portraits, we approached the session with movement in mind. The kids explored the alley, laughed with each other, climbed onto benches, and ran between murals while their parents joined in on the fun.

One of my favorite images from the evening was actually something we planned intentionally. While the parents sat together against one of the giant flower murals, one of the kids ran straight through the frame, creating a burst of motion that gave the image a really cool editorial feel. It’s playful, slightly chaotic, and completely full of personality. In other words, it captures the Lee family perfectly.

Why Urban Locations Can Be So Fun for Family Photos

Urban photo locations bring a completely different energy to family sessions.

Instead of standing in one spot in a field or park, families can move around and interact with the space. Murals, sidewalks, benches, alleyways, and textured walls create a variety of backdrops that keep things interesting without needing to travel far.

For kids especially, that freedom makes a huge difference. They can wander, run, and explore naturally instead of feeling like they need to sit perfectly still.

The camera simply follows along, capturing the little moments that happen in between the posed photos. A sibling hug that turns into giggles. A kid sprinting past the camera. A parent scooping someone up for a quick cuddle.

Those unscripted moments are often the ones families end up loving the most.

Of Course Beetle Had to Join the Session

No Lee family session would be complete without Beetle making an appearance. Pets always bring their own personality into a family session, and Beetle is no exception. Between exploring the alley and happily hanging out with the kids, he fit right into the playful energy of the evening- and goodness knows we love that laid back beagle energy.

Including dogs in family photos is always a little unpredictable, but that unpredictability tends to create some of the most memorable images. A quick nose nudge, a happy tail wag, or a curious dog wandering into the frame often becomes a favorite moment later.

And let’s be honest — dogs are part of the family story too.

Why I Always Look Forward to Photographing the Lee Family

Photographing the same family over several years is one of the things I love most about this work. You get to see how the kids grow, how personalities evolve, and how the little dynamics between family members stay the same in the best possible way. The Lee family is always full of laughter, movement, and just the right amount of chaos that makes sessions feel genuine.

They’re also one of those families who never shy away from trying something new. Each year we get to plan a slightly different concept, and watching those ideas come to life is half the fun. Getting to document that evolving family story year after year is honestly one of the biggest privileges of being a photographer.
