The Ultimate Guide to Planning a Smash Cake Photoshoot
Cake smash sessions are one of the most fun milestones to photograph. Theyβre joyful, chaotic, and full of personality. Whether your little one dives in face first or gently pokes at the frosting with a single finger, these sessions always tell the sweetest story of who they are right now. If youβre planning a smash cake photoshoot in Central Indiana, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know. From what to expect, to how to prepare, to what happens if your baby decides cake just isnβt their thing.
What Is a Smash Cake Photoshoot
A smash cake photoshoot celebrates your baby turning one, and itβs just as fun as it sounds. These milestone sessions are a playful mix of portraits, frosting-covered fun, and a whole lot of personality.
At The Heart Narrative, most cake smash sessions take place in my cozy in-home studio where the lighting is soft, the temperature is comfortable, and everything you need is ready to go- although outdoors or at home cake smash sessions hold special places in my heart. I handle the setup, props, styling, and even the cake itself so you can focus on your baby and the memories weβre creating.
Whatβs Included in a Cake Smash Session
Every session includes setup, props, a custom cake, and all the styling help you need to make the experience easy and stress free.
I offer several options for milestone and cake smash photography, from simple, classic setups to fully styled themes with custom backdrops and optional splash tubs. You can explore the full details and pricing for each collection on my Milestone Photography Page.
Where Cake Smash Sessions Take Place
Most cake smash photoshoots are held in my home studio in Sheridan, Indiana, just north of Indianapolis. Itβs a cozy, light-filled space designed specifically for milestone sessions, featuring soft tones, seamless paper backdrops, and an egg chair that babies love.
If youβre envisioning something outdoors, we can also plan a cake smash session in one of my favorite local parks like Cool Creek, MacGregor Park, or Flat Fork Creek Park. Outdoor sessions are especially beautiful in the spring and fall when the light and color are at their best.
What to Expect During Your Smash Cake Session
Cake smash sessions are all about fun and flexibility. Hereβs how it usually flows:
Milestone portraits first: We start with a few clean, simple photos of your baby before the cake comes out. These are perfect for keepsakes or first birthday invitations.
The cake smash: Once your baby is comfortable, we bring out the cake. Some little ones dive right in, others approach it cautiously. Either way, their reactions are priceless.
Optional tub splash: For families who choose a longer collection, we can wrap up with a small bubble bath setup. Babies love it, and itβs the perfect way to end on happy, squeaky clean notes.
Sessions usually last 45 to 60 minutes, depending on your babyβs comfort level. Thereβs no pressure or rush. Everything unfolds at their pace.
What to Bring to Your Cake Smash Photoshoot
You donβt need to bring much. I handle most of the setup and styling so you can keep things simple. Hereβs what to pack:
Two to three outfits for your baby (a clean one for portraits, one for the smash, and a spare for afterward)
Wipes, towels, and a backup shirt for you (frosting travels fast)
A comfort item or favorite toy for your baby
Any special props or keepsakes youβd like included (a banner, stuffed animal, or heirloom toy)
If your baby has allergies, just let me know ahead of time so we can plan a custom cake with my bakery partner, Sweet Bites Bakery.
Cake Smash Styling and Theme Ideas
Your babyβs cake smash setup can be as minimal or as themed as you like. Iβll help you choose a backdrop, color palette, and cake design that fits your vision while staying true to your babyβs personality.
Some of my most popular studio themes include:
Neutral and modern with soft pastels
Floral or boho-inspired sets
Sports or hobby themes
Whimsical or storybook setups
Seasonal favorites like βSweet as a Pumpkinβ or βWinter One-derlandβ
If youβre not sure where to start, Iβll share inspiration boards and help you choose a style that photographs beautifully and feels like you.
Common Smash Cake Questions
What if my baby doesnβt like cake?
Thatβs totally fine and surprisingly common. Some babies go all in, others just poke or taste. I have a few tricks up my sleeve (blueberries or puffs behind the cake) to keep your one year old interested. Every reaction is adorable, and Iβll capture the full range of expressions and curiosity.
What if my baby has never had sugar before?
You can request a lightly sweetened cake option. Many parents prefer this, and my baker can easily accommodate it.
Can parents or siblings join in?
Yes! Itβs included in the One-derful baby package, or you can add on. I love when families join for a few photos at the start of the session, or when siblings join in the cake eating at the end. It adds connection and context to your story.
Do you include the cake?
Yes, every cake smash session includes a custom cake from Sweet Bites Bakery, designed to coordinate with your theme and color palette.
How early should we book?
I recommend booking six to eight weeks before your babyβs first birthday, especially if you want your gallery ready in time for invitations or a party.
