Pro Tips for Newborn Photos with Siblings | The Clay Family
If you’ve ever tried to get three kids under six in one spot at the same time, you already know newborn photos with siblings require a little flexibility. Don’t worry- it’s normal.
Toddlers rarely wake up excited to sit still for photos, newborns run entirely on their own schedule, and somebody usually needs a snack halfway through everything. The families who end up enjoying their sessions most are usually the ones who stop trying to make the morning feel perfect.
The Clay family’s session felt a lot like this season probably feels for them right now: busy, close, loud in certain moments, and full of kids climbing into laps anytime somebody sat down for more than thirty seconds.
Brooke and Matt spend most of their days at home together with their three kids, balancing newborn life, preschool drop-offs, kindergarten schedules, and all the unpredictability that comes with little kids. Adding baby Briggs into the mix made the whole session feel especially sweet because Dawson and Foster were completely locked in on their new baby brother from the start.
If you’re wondering how to prepare for a newborn and sibling photoshoot without making yourself miserable beforehand, here are a few things that actually help.
1. Keep Expectations Realistic for Siblings
Kids don’t need to sit perfectly still for every photo for sibling images to work.
The Clay family’s session moved really naturally because nobody was trying to force constant eye contact or perfectly posed moments the entire time. The kids interacted with Briggs, moved around when they needed to, then settled back in again naturally throughout the session.
That rhythm usually works a lot better than expecting kids to “perform” for an hour.
2. Give Yourself Plenty of Time Before the Session
Newborn session mornings tend to move slower than expected, especially with multiple kids involved.
Building extra time into the morning helps everybody feel calmer once the session starts. Brooke and Matt kept things relaxed beforehand, which made the whole session feel easier from the beginning.
Nobody was rushing to get out the door or trying to recover from a stressful morning before photos even started.
3. Keep Outfits Simple and Comfortable
The Clay family kept everything really neutral and comfortable, which photographed beautifully without feeling overly formal.
Soft textures, simple colors, and outfits kids can comfortably move around in almost always work best for newborn photos with siblings. It keeps the focus on interaction and connection instead of constantly adjusting clothes or worrying about wrinkles.
And baby Briggs’ little knit outfit deserved its own moment, honestly.
4. Focus More on Interaction Than Perfect Posing
Sibling newborn photos usually feel strongest when kids have something natural to focus on instead of constantly being asked to smile at the camera.
Holding the baby, laying together on the bed, sitting with parents, talking to each other- all of those interactions help the session feel more relaxed and natural for kids.
That approach worked especially well during the Clay family’s session because everything stayed really easygoing from start to finish.
5. Don’t Stress About Making Your Home Perfect
Most newborn lifestyle photography sessions really only use a few spaces with good natural light anyway.
The Clay family’s home felt warm, comfortable, and lived in, which photographed beautifully without needing everything to look untouched or overly styled beforehand.
Nobody needs a perfectly finished nursery or spotless house for newborn photos with siblings to feel meaningful.
6. Let Kids Move Around During the Session
Some of my favorite images from this session happened because nobody was trying too hard to control every moment.
Dawson curled herself around the baby naturally. Foster bounced in and out depending on his mood. Their dog wandered through scenes whenever attention levels felt acceptable.
It all worked because the session had room to breathe.
Kids don’t need to sit perfectly still to create meaningful photos. Sometimes the moments parents love most are the ones that felt the most ordinary while they were happening.
The Clay Family Session
Before their session, Brooke described this season of life as:
“Chaotic, but so worth it.”
That felt pretty accurate the entire morning.
There were baby snuggles, interruptions, snack breaks, kids talking over each other, and moments where everybody somehow ended up piled together on the couch anyway.
Nothing felt overly polished.
Just a family adjusting to life with three kids and already loving baby Briggs a whole lot.
And honestly, that’s usually the stuff worth remembering later.
