Summer Extended Family Photos at MacGregor Park in Westfield, Indiana
Extended family sessions usually start one of two ways. Either everybody arrives already stressed because coordinating this many people feels like a part-time job, or everybody decides ahead of time that if somebody gets rained on, a kid stops cooperating for five minutes, or a grandparent starts making jokes during the “serious” photos, life will continue on just fine afterward. Because let’s face it, extended family photos can feel overwhelming to plan, especially when you're coordinating grandparents, adult siblings, cousins, and little kids all at once.
Thankfully, the Smith family definitely leaned into the second approach.
This session was planned as a gift for Nana’s 65th birthday, so everybody met me at MacGregor Park in Westfield for summer family photos with grandparents, grandkids, adult siblings, cousins, and a very solid level of outfit coordination. Enough to look cohesive together without feeling overly matched or like somebody distributed a required color palette in a group text three months ago.
MacGregor Park looked really good that evening too. The wildflowers were everywhere, the grass was tall, everything was aggressively green from all the Indiana summer rain, and then naturally it started sprinkling on us halfway through the session because Indiana weather loves staying committed to a bit. Nobody really blinked though. We shifted around when we needed to, kept moving, and the kids mostly treated the whole thing like an outdoor cousin hangout that happened to involve a camera occasionally.
MacGregor Park Works Really Well for Extended Family Photos
Some locations are great for smaller family sessions but get tricky really fast once you start adding grandparents, adult siblings, cousins, and every grouping people want once everybody is finally together in one place. MacGregor Park gives you enough room to spread people out a little without losing the feeling that everybody’s still connected to the same session. The walking paths make it easy to move naturally between spots, and the wildflowers in the summer photograph beautifully without looking too polished or overly curated.
The whole location feels relaxed in a way that works really well for larger family sessions, especially because it’s in such a great location- right off SR 38 and US 31. Families travel from Indianapolis, Carmel, Zionsville, Noblesville, and Westfield because MacGregor Park is such an easy central location. It has open fields, tall grasses, mature trees… the midwest tricfecta of perfect family photo locations. The kids had room to move around between photos, the grandparents weren’t hiking across a field carrying bags and water bottles, and nobody spent the evening standing shoulder-to-shoulder in one spot wondering how much longer family photos were going to take.

Their Outfits Came Together So Well
Extended family outfits can either make everything feel really effortless or make everybody look like they accidentally showed up to different events. The Smith family stayed in softer earth tones and neutrals that worked perfectly with all the green at MacGregor Park without feeling overly matched. Nothing looked stiff or too formal either. Everybody still looked comfortable and like themselves, which always photographs better than trying too hard to coordinate every tiny detail.
And somehow everybody survived a humid Indiana summer evening in light-colored clothing without visibly regretting their decisions by the end of the session, which honestly feels a little impressive now that I think about it.
The Grandparents Photos Were Some of My Favorites
The full group photos obviously matter during extended family sessions. Everybody wants the updated image with all the grandkids looking mostly toward the camera at the same time. But the smaller combinations always end up being the ones I notice most while editing.
Nana and Poppy with the grandkids.
The adult siblings together again.
The cousins piled together on the bench talking over each other instead of paying attention to me.
There’s something really nice about photographing families in this stage of life where everybody has expanded outward a little but still comes back together like this. You could tell this family genuinely enjoys being around each other, and that changes the entire feel of a session without anybody needing to force it.
Summer Family Photos in Westfield
I feel like summer family sessions sometimes get overlooked because everybody immediately jumps to fall photos the second Target puts fake pumpkins near the front entrance. But summer evenings like this are hard to beat. Everything at MacGregor Park looked full and green, the kids were happy being outside, and the later sunset gave us plenty of time to work through all the different family combinations without the session feeling rushed.
Even the little bit of rain ended up fitting the evening pretty perfectly.
