Planning Maternity Photos in Central Indiana | What to Know Before You Book

You are growing a whole person, which means you already have enough happening without also needing to become a wardrobe stylist, location scout, toddler negotiator, weather analyst, and professional poser by Tuesday.

That is exactly why this guide exists.

Maternity photos are not about turning pregnancy into a performance. They are about pausing long enough to remember this part of the story before everything changes again. Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, whether you feel amazing or very much like your body has become a rental property with questionable management, this season deserves to be documented in a way that feels like you.

This guide includes images from Alli’s maternity session, which is such a beautiful example of how maternity photos can feel elevated, personal, and still completely centered on motherhood. Her gallery had gorgeous gowns, soft connection, and that quiet “before everything shifts” feeling that makes maternity photos so special.

If you are planning maternity photos in Central Indiana, including Indianapolis, Carmel, Westfield, Fishers, Noblesville, Zionsville, Sheridan, or Hamilton County, here is what to think through before you book.

Start With the Kind of Maternity Session You Actually Want

Before you choose outfits, locations, or packages, start with the feeling you want from your maternity photos. This is where so many people get stuck because they think maternity photos are supposed to look one very specific way: dramatic gown, open field, hands on belly, wind doing the absolute most.

And that can be beautiful. Truly.

But it is not the only option.

Your maternity session can be casual and easy at home with your family. It can be relaxed and playful outside with your kids climbing into your lap and your partner making you laugh. It can be soft and cozy in the nursery, with tiny shoes on the dresser and your toddler trying to claim the baby blanket as their own. It can be more editorial, polished, and styled with rented gowns, studio lighting, or a location that feels a little more elevated. It can be simple portraits of just you, or it can include everyone who is already part of this baby’s story.

There is no one correct version of maternity photos. The right version is the one that feels connected to the season you are actually in.

If you want something calm and intimate, an in-home maternity session may be perfect. If you want movement, light, and a little nature, an outdoor session might be the best fit. If you want something more dramatic, styled, or editorial, we can plan around that too. The goal is not to copy someone else’s maternity photos. The goal is to create images that feel honest to you.

Find a Photographer Whose Style Feels Like You

Choosing a maternity photographer is about more than finding someone with pretty photos. Pretty matters, of course. We are not pretending it doesn’t. But style, approach, and personality matter too.

Look at how a photographer captures connection. Do the images feel posed and polished, relaxed and candid, editorial and dramatic, cozy and emotional, or somewhere in between? Do you see variety in their galleries? Do the moms look comfortable? Do families look connected? Do kids look like they were allowed to be kids, or do they look like they were emotionally bribed into stillness with a fruit snack ransom?

You also want to think about how you want to feel during the session. Some people want lots of direction because being in front of the camera feels awkward. Some want a more documentary approach where the photographer guides the flow without making everything feel overly posed. Some want help with styling, location planning, and outfit choices from the beginning.

For maternity photos, I think comfort matters a lot. Pregnancy can already feel vulnerable. Your body is changing, your energy may be unpredictable, and you may not feel like yourself every single day. The right photographer should help you feel supported, guided, and never like you have to perform your way through the session.

If you are still trying to figure out what kind of photographer is right for your family, this post on how to choose a family photographer is a helpful place to start.

When to Book Your Maternity Photos

I recommend booking your maternity session as early as you can, especially if you want a weekend date, a specific season, hair and makeup, gown rentals, or a maternity and newborn package. You do not need every detail figured out before reaching out. We can talk through the vision together. But getting on the calendar early gives us more room to plan without rushing.

A good rule of thumb is to book sometime in your second trimester. That gives you time to think about the kind of session you want, choose outfits, reserve hair and makeup if you want it, and make sure we are planning around the best timing for your pregnancy.

If you are considering newborn photos too, booking both maternity and newborn sessions together can make the whole process feel easier. Instead of reaching out again after the baby arrives, when time has become soup and you may not know what day it is, we can plan the bigger picture ahead of time.

When to Take Maternity Photos

Most maternity sessions happen somewhere around 28 to 34 weeks. That timing usually gives you a visible bump while still allowing you to feel comfortable enough to move, sit, stand, walk, and enjoy the session.

That said, every pregnancy is different. If this is your first baby, you may feel great a little later into pregnancy. If this is not your first baby, or if you are carrying multiples, or if you tend to feel uncomfortable earlier, we may want to schedule closer to the beginning of that window. If you have a high-risk pregnancy or know your baby may arrive early, earlier is usually better.

The goal is to photograph this season while you still feel like you can enjoy it. You do not need to wait until the very end of pregnancy. In fact, please do not wait so long that the session becomes a game of “how fast can I waddle to that pretty patch of light before I need to sit down?”

Comfort matters. Timing should support that.

Choose a Location That Matches the Feeling

Your location should match the kind of maternity session you want. Central Indiana has so many options, and the best choice depends on your personality, your family, the season, and how much energy you want the session to have.

Outdoor maternity photos can be beautiful in parks, fields, gardens, creeks, downtown spaces, family land, or anywhere with good light and enough room to move. In-home maternity photos feel cozy, personal, and connected to the life you are building. Studio-style maternity photos can feel more polished, simple, or editorial. You can also think beyond the obvious locations and choose somewhere that feels meaningful or unexpected.

Maybe that is your own backyard. Maybe it is the nursery. Maybe it is a favorite date-night spot, a downtown sidewalk, a flower field, a lake, a library, a greenhouse, a pizza picnic, a cozy kitchen, or the place where your family spends the most time together.

The best maternity photo location is not always the fanciest one. It is the one that supports the feeling you want and gives us space to create images that feel true to you.

At-Home Maternity Photos

At-home maternity photos are perfect if you want your session to feel relaxed, intimate, and personal. Your home does not need to be perfectly decorated or magazine-ready. It just needs to be yours.

In-home maternity sessions can happen in the nursery, bedroom, living room, kitchen, backyard, or any space with beautiful light. These sessions are especially sweet if you already have kids because they allow everyone to stay in a familiar environment. Toddlers can take breaks. Snacks are nearby. Nobody has to be loaded into the car with seven emergency items and one missing shoe.

At-home maternity photos can feel soft and quiet, but they can also feel playful and real. You can snuggle on the bed, read books with your kids, make pancakes, sit in the nursery, fold tiny clothes, or simply document the way your family feels before the new baby arrives.

This kind of session is less about creating a perfect scene and more about remembering the home your baby is being welcomed into.

Outdoor Maternity Photos in Central Indiana

Outdoor maternity photos are a beautiful choice if you want natural light, movement, and a little seasonal magic. Central Indiana gives us a lot to work with: spring blooms, summer fields, creek sessions, tall grass, fall color, winter evergreens, and parks with soft evening light.

Outdoor sessions are wonderful for families who want a relaxed, connected feel. Kids can move, explore, hold hands, run ahead, come back for snuggles, and generally behave like actual children instead of tiny statues with opinions. Outdoor spaces also give us variety: walking shots, seated moments, portraits of just mom, family photo sessions, partner photos, and playful sibling moments.

The biggest thing to consider is weather and comfort. Summer maternity photos can be gorgeous, but if you are 33 weeks pregnant in July, we are going to choose timing and location carefully because nobody needs to feel like they are being gently roasted for the sake of art. Fall and spring are lovely, but weather can be unpredictable. Winter can be beautiful too, especially with cozy layers, but warmth matters.

A good outdoor maternity session plan considers the season, light, walking distance, bathroom access if needed, and how comfortable you will feel in the location.

Studio or Editorial Maternity Photos

Some maternity sessions call for something more styled, dramatic, or editorial. This might mean a studio-style session, a rented indoor location, a more elevated outfit, dramatic gowns, clean backdrops, or a moodier feel.

Alli’s session is a great example of how wardrobe can completely shape the feeling of a maternity gallery. She rented gowns from Indy Couture Gowns, and they were absolutely stunning. Renting a gown can be a great option if you want something elevated or dramatic without buying a dress you may only wear once. It also gives you access to pieces that are designed to photograph beautifully, which makes a huge difference.

An editorial maternity session does not have to feel stiff or unapproachable. It can still be warm, connected, and personal. The styling is simply more intentional. The dress, location, light, and posing all work together to create something a little more polished.

This is a great choice if you want maternity photos that feel special, elevated, and different from your everyday life. You are allowed to want that. Pregnancy is ordinary and extraordinary at the same time, which is exactly why both cozy at-home photos and dramatic gown photos can be completely valid.

Who Should Be Included in Your Maternity Photos?

One of the biggest decisions to make is who you want included in your maternity session. Some moms want photos of just themselves. Some want their partner included. Some want the whole family. Some want a small keepsake maternity session focused only on mom, and then a larger family maternity session with everyone included.

All of those options are valid.

A solo maternity session gives you space to focus on your body, your baby, and this specific season of motherhood. It can feel quiet, reflective, bold, soft, or editorial depending on the vision. A session with your partner can document the relationship before your family changes again. A family maternity session includes the people already loving this baby before they arrive.

If you have kids, including them can make the session feel fuller and more connected to the story. It also usually makes the session a little more unpredictable, because children tend to bring their own agenda and sometimes that agenda is “touch mom’s belly for two seconds and then run toward a stick.”

That is okay. We plan for that.

Maternity Photos With Kids

Maternity photos with kids are sweet, hilarious, tender, chaotic, and sometimes all of those things in the same four-minute span. If you already have children, this session is not just about the baby you are carrying. It is also about the big sibling season your family is entering.

That does not mean your kids have to be perfectly cooperative. We can photograph them hugging your belly, sitting in your lap, holding your hand, playing nearby, snuggling with you, or simply being part of the family rhythm. Some kids are very interested in the baby. Some are mildly suspicious. Some want to kiss your belly. Some want to climb you like playground equipment. All of it tells the truth about this season.

If you have a toddler, I recommend choosing a location and session plan that allows for movement. Asking a toddler to stand still and gently smile at the belly for an hour is not a plan. It is a fantasy novel. We will build in movement, breaks, snacks if needed, and plenty of low-pressure moments.

This is also where prepping your family ahead of time can really help. You can read more about that here: prepping your family for photos. The goal is not to make kids perform. The goal is to help them feel comfortable enough to show up as themselves.

Choosing the Right Maternity Photography Package

When planning maternity photos, think about what you actually want from the session and gallery. Do you want a short keepsake session with just you? Do you want a full maternity session with your partner and kids? Do you want maternity and newborn photos together? Do you want to document the whole first year?

A smaller maternity session can be a beautiful fit if you want a handful of meaningful images to remember the pregnancy. This might be perfect for solo portraits, a simple outdoor session, or a quieter at-home session. A larger session gives us more time for variety, outfit changes, family photos, partner photos, kid breaks, and a slower pace.

Some moms choose to do both: a smaller session focused on just them and a larger session with the whole family. That can be a really lovely option if you want space for both sides of this season. One session can feel more calm, styled, and reflective, while the other documents the family connection around this baby.

You do not have to know exactly what package you need before reaching out. We can talk through what matters most to you and choose the session that makes sense. I can also customize a package if you are hoping to bundle maternity, newborn, or first-year milestone photos together.

Maternity, Newborn, and First Year Photos

Maternity photos are the beginning of a bigger story. They capture the “before,” when your baby is already so loved but not quite in your arms yet. Newborn photos capture the arrival, the tiny details, the sleepy stretches, the way your home changes once the baby is here. Milestone photos capture all the ways your baby grows faster than seems reasonable or legally fair.

If you know you want newborn photos, it can be helpful to plan those at the same time as your maternity session. That way, you are not trying to research photographers or compare packages while recovering, feeding a baby, answering texts, and wondering why every clock in the house has become meaningless.

A maternity and newborn package keeps the process simple. A first-year package can take it even further, documenting pregnancy, newborn, sitting, first birthday, or whatever milestones feel most important to your family. It is not about needing photos of every single thing. It is about choosing the parts of the story you know you will want to hold onto.

What to Wear for Maternity Photos

What you wear for maternity photos should follow the feeling you want from the session. A casual at-home session may call for soft knits, jeans, a simple dress, a robe, or bare feet in the nursery. An outdoor session might look beautiful with a flowy dress, textured layers, boots, or soft colors that work with the season. A studio or editorial session may be the right place for a dramatic gown, fitted dress, sheer layer, or something more elevated.

This is where Style & Select can be so helpful. My clients have access to styling support that can help pull together outfits based on color, size, style, and the overall feel of the session. It can make the process feel less like standing in your closet asking a pile of clothes to explain themselves.

For maternity photos, I usually recommend choosing pieces that highlight your bump while still making you feel comfortable and supported. Dresses with movement photograph beautifully. Gowns can add drama and elegance. More fitted pieces can be gorgeous too, as long as the fabric is flattering and you feel good wearing it.

One thing I would be careful with is jersey knit dresses. Some can photograph beautifully, but many cling in all the wrong places, especially if the fabric is thin or unforgiving. Pregnancy bodies are doing enough without a dress deciding to form an alliance with every seam, bump, and undergarment line. If you want a more fitted look, choose fabric with structure, quality, and enough weight to photograph smoothly.

Alli’s rented gowns from Indy Couture Gowns were stunning because they were designed to photograph beautifully. The movement, fabric, and fit made the session feel elevated without making it feel stiff. Renting can be a great option if you want that kind of look without buying something you may only wear once.

Hair, Makeup, and Feeling Like Yourself

Professional hair and makeup are not required for maternity photos, but they can be a really lovely addition if they help you feel more confident and relaxed. A good makeup artist understands how to enhance your features for the camera without making you feel like you have been replaced by a more contoured cousin.

Some moms want a very natural look. Some want full glam. Some want polished but still soft. All of those are fine. The goal is not to look like someone else. The goal is to feel like yourself on a day when you do not have to do every single thing alone.

I can refer clients to a handful of amazing makeup artists, which makes the planning process easier. If hair and makeup are important to you, I recommend booking early so we have time to coordinate schedules.

And if professional hair and makeup are not your thing, that is completely okay. Your session does not have to become an entire production. Clean hair, a little makeup if you wear it, and clothing that makes you feel good can be more than enough.

Props and Personal Details

Props are not required for maternity photos, but personal details can make the session feel more meaningful. This might be a sonogram, tiny baby shoes, a special blanket, a letter board, a newspaper announcement, a baby outfit, a family heirloom, or something funny and specific to your family.

And truly, the sky is the limit. If pizza is part of your pregnancy story, bring the pizza. If you want to document the wild craving that carried you through the third trimester, I support the snack journalism. If you have a newspaper announcement, tiny sneakers, a meaningful book, or a little outfit hanging in the nursery, those details can be really sweet.

The key is to choose props that feel personal instead of adding things just because Pinterest told you to. A few meaningful details will usually photograph better than a whole pile of items that do not really connect to your story.

What Happens During a Maternity Session?

A maternity session with me is guided, but not stiff. You do not need to know how to pose. You do not need to practice what to do with your hands. You do not need to arrive with a fully rehearsed expression that says “serene maternal glow” while your hips are actively filing a complaint.

I will guide you through movement, connection, and simple posing that feels natural. We will get portraits of you, photos with your partner if they are included, family images if your kids are there, detail shots, and all the little in-between moments that make the session feel like yours.

If kids are included, we keep the session flexible. We may start with family photos while everyone is fresh, then move into mom-only portraits, partner photos, or more playful images depending on how the kids are doing. The order can shift because real families are not spreadsheets.

The goal is for the session to feel relaxed and supported, not like you have been dropped into a field and asked to become a maternity statue.

What Happens After Your Maternity Session?

After your session, I carefully cull and edit your images, then deliver your gallery in a way that lets you slow down and actually enjoy them. You will be able to view your photos, choose favorites if your package includes image selections, and decide how you want to use the images in your home and life.

Maternity photos are beautiful on their own, but they also pair so well with newborn photos, albums, nursery artwork, framed prints, and baby books. They become part of the visual beginning of your child’s story. One day, your baby may see these images and understand, in a small but powerful way, that they were loved before they were even here.

If you want to know more about what happens after a session, this post walks through [what to expect with photo gallery delivery].

And after you have received your images, shared them with family, printed them, or tucked them into an album, leaving a review is one of the most helpful ways to support your photographer. Reviews help future families understand what the experience actually feels like, especially when they are trying to choose someone for such personal seasons of life. You can read more about that here: how leaving reviews can shape your photographer’s success.

Maternity Photo FAQs

When should I take maternity photos?

Most maternity photos are taken between 28 and 34 weeks. This usually gives you a visible bump while still allowing you to feel comfortable enough to move and enjoy the session. If you are carrying multiples, have a high-risk pregnancy, or tend to feel uncomfortable earlier, scheduling closer to 28 to 30 weeks may be a better fit.

When should I book maternity photos?

I recommend booking maternity photos in your second trimester if possible. This gives us more flexibility with dates, locations, hair and makeup, gown rentals, and any maternity and newborn package planning.

What should I wear for maternity photos?

Wear something that fits the feeling you want for your session. Flowing dresses, structured gowns, soft knits, fitted dresses with quality fabric, textured layers, and elevated casual outfits can all photograph beautifully. Avoid anything too thin, clingy, itchy, or uncomfortable.

Can I include my partner in maternity photos?

Yes. Including your partner can be a beautiful way to document this season before your family changes. Your session can include a mix of solo maternity portraits, partner photos, and family images.

Can I include my kids in maternity photos?

Absolutely. Maternity photos with kids can be sweet, playful, and full of personality. We will plan the session in a way that allows for movement, breaks, and realistic expectations, especially with toddlers.

Where should I take maternity photos in Central Indiana?

Maternity photos can happen at home, outdoors, in a studio-style setting, at a favorite location, or somewhere meaningful to your family. The best location depends on the feeling you want, the season, your comfort, and who will be included.

Do I need professional hair and makeup?

No, but professional hair and makeup can be a great option if it helps you feel confident and relaxed. I can refer clients to trusted makeup artists if they want that added support.

Should I book maternity and newborn photos together?

If you already know you want newborn photos, booking maternity and newborn together can make planning easier. It keeps the process simple and allows us to document both the before and after of your baby’s arrival.

Maternity Photos That Feel Like the Beginning of the Story

Maternity photos do not have to be dramatic unless you want them to be. They do not have to be formal. They do not have to look like anyone else’s version of pregnancy. They can be quiet, playful, editorial, cozy, emotional, funny, simple, bold, or full of your whole family piled together in the beautiful little chaos of waiting for someone new.

What matters is that they feel like you.

This season is temporary in a way that can be hard to believe while you are living it. The kicks, the anticipation, the older sibling questions, the nursery corner, the way your hands rest on your belly without even thinking about it. One day, all of this will be part of the “before.” Maternity photos give you a way to remember it.

Not perfectly. Not performatively. Just honestly, beautifully, and with enough care that years from now, you can look back and remember who you were while you were waiting.
