Breastfeeding Photoshoot at Cool Creek Park in Westfield, Indiana

When Lee Ann reached out about a breastfeeding milestone session with her son Parker, I said yes before she even finished asking. Some families feel woven into the whole story of my business, and hers is one of them. Cool Creek Park in Westfield is where we did their very first family session together, years and one more kid ago, so heading back there for this felt like closing a little loop. More than anything, I wanted these photos to hold onto the quiet, steady bond between Lee Ann and her little guy, the one that happens a dozen times a day and somehow almost never gets photographed.

How Lee Ann and I Go Way Back

I met Lee Ann almost seven years ago at the most random place possible, a Facebook Marketplace pickup. One of those driveway handoffs that should take thirty seconds. Instead we stood there talking about motherhood, boys, and breastfeeding, because I was in the thick of organizing the local Big Latch On at the time and apparently cannot help myself. Her family of three (then!) became the very first family I ever photographed. Since that day, I’ve photographed her daughter’s first birthday and her maternity session while she was pregnant with Parker, so standing back at Cool Creek with Parker in her arms was a full circle moment I didn’t take lightly.

Why Breastfeeding Milestones Deserve to Be Documented

Motherhood moves so fast. There are a thousand tiny moments that slip by before we realize they’ve turned into memories, and breastfeeding might be the sneakiest of them all. It’s tender and raw and gone before you know it, and because it happens at 3 a.m., in the back seat of the car, and on the couch next to a half-eaten granola bar, it almost never makes it into the photo album. It deserves the same care we give first steps and birthdays.

Breastfeeding is a big part of how I found my way to photography in the first place. Before I ever had a camera in my hands for work, I was helping build community support for nursing moms, and I watched so many of them carry this quiet, exhausting, beautiful job without anyone really seeing it. Whether you nurse for six weeks or a few years, and whether it came easy or took everything you had, that part of your story matters. Seeing it through fresh eyes lets us feel seen, valid, and worthy.

What a Breastfeeding Photoshoot Looks Like With The Heart Narrative

If you’ve never done a session like this, here’s how it usually goes. We meet somewhere calm, whether that’s a park like Cool Creek, your own living room, or the studio, and your baby sets the pace. If they’re hungry, we feed. If they’d rather pop off to grab a leaf or stare at a dog walking by, that’s part of the story too, and some of my favorite frames happen in those in-between minutes. You decide how much you’re comfortable showing, and I’ll guide you on angles and blankets so you never feel exposed. Partners and big siblings are always welcome to jump in for a few frames.

What to Wear for a Breastfeeding Photoshoots

Lee Ann kept things simple with a soft, neutral dress that moved with the breeze, and Parker wore a linen romper. Those tones looked beautiful against the greens and golds of the park, and nothing pulled attention away from the two of them.

If you’re planning a nursing session, think about access first and looks second. A dress with buttons or a wrap front, a stretchy neckline, or a soft top you can easily pull aside will save you from wrestling with fabric while your baby is hungry and impatient. Flowy dresses, soft blankets, and light fabrics photograph beautifully outdoors, and textures like linen, gauze, and knit add warmth without competing with your faces. Comfort wins every single time, because if you’re fidgeting with your outfit, I can see it and so can the camera. If you’d like help pulling colors together, my family photo color palette guide is a good place to start.

When to Schedule Breastfeeding Photos

There’s no wrong age for this. Some moms book in the newborn weeks, some wait until their babe is a curious little explorer like Parker, and some book right before weaning as a gentle way to close the chapter. Whenever you book, try to plan around a usual feeding time so your little one shows up a bit hungry. For outdoor sessions, I aim for the last couple of hours before sunset, when the light is soft and warm and nobody is squinting.

The Emotions Behind the Gallery

Photographing this milestone felt like freezing time for just a second. You can feel the story in every frame. Quiet strength, so much love, and that deep calm only a mom can give. Watching Lee Ann step into this chapter, years after that driveway conversation, reminded me exactly why I do this work. These photos are a love letter to motherhood. Honest, a little unpolished, and full of heart.

Breastfeeding Photoshoot Questions

Do I have to show skin?

Not at all. You choose how much is in the frame, and plenty of my favorite nursing photos are mostly about the look on your face and the way your baby holds onto you.

Where do you photograph?

Westfield, Carmel, Noblesville, Sheridan, and all over the north side of Indianapolis.

Can we do this at home instead of a park?

Yes. In-home sessions are cozy and relaxed, especially if your little one nurses best in a familiar spot.

Can bottle-feeding or pumping moms book a session like this?

Absolutely. Feeding is feeding, and every version deserves to be remembered.
