This studio cake smash session was such a fun one to bring together. Kristen wanted a 70s-inspired “Groovy One” theme for her daughter’s first birthday photos, with peace signs, bright colors, a VW bus, fun sunglasses, flowers, and all the retro little details. Basically, if a first birthday party and a vintage record sleeve had a very cheerful baby, this would be it.

But what I loved most about this session was that even with the color, the balloons, the cake, the flowers, the bus, and the tiny groovy details, baby girl was still the whole point. That is always the goal with a themed cake smash session. The setup can be playful and full of personality, but it should never swallow the baby. The theme should support the milestone, not steal the microphone from it.

This Groovy One cake smash was bright, happy, and full of charm, but it still left plenty of room for all the things that make first birthday photos so sweet: curious little hands, proud standing practice, frosting investigations, big sibling chaos, and the tiny expressions that only last for this one little window of babyhood.

Some babies dive straight in like they have been training for this moment their entire lives. For this session, instead of doing a milk bath after the cake smash, the family opted for a few family photos. I loved that choice. First birthday sessions are about the baby, yes, but they are also about the whole family reaching this milestone together. The first year is a lot. It is sweet and exhausting and fast and blurry and full of tiny changes that somehow happen overnight.
