Say Goodbye with Dignity | End of Life Pet Photography in Fishers, Indiana

There are some photography sessions that stay with you long after the camera is packed away.

When Kenna Ballard reached out and told me their dog Ari had been diagnosed with terminal GI lymphoma, she explained that they likely only had a few weeks left with her. Ari had been part of their family for eight years, and like so many dogs, she wasn’t simply a pet. She had been there through the early years of Kenna and Adam’s life together, woven right into the everyday rhythm of their home.

I’ve been photographing the Ballard family since the early days of my business, back when I was primarily known as a baby photographer and Ari was the first baby, right in the center of everything. She had appeared in family sessions over the years, quietly sitting beside her people and her kids, knowing she belonged there. So when Kenna reached out and said the time they had left with Ari might be short, the priority was simple. We were going to make time for one more session.

Kenna later shared what those first days felt like after they learned the diagnosis.

“When we found out Ari was terminal, I immediately texted Lauren and told her I wasn't sure how much time we had left, but I knew I wanted to capture some final memories with our girl while she still felt good enough to do so. With the busy holiday season upon us, I knew it was a big ask, but without hesitation she said, ‘I'll make something happen.’”

That is exactly what end of life pet photography is meant to do. It creates space for families to document the quiet, ordinary love they share with an animal who has been part of their life for years.

A Dog Named Ari

Kenna described Ari in a way that perfectly summed up her personality. Her full name might have been Ari, but she also answered to Nug, Nuggy Girl, and Nuglet. She was an eight-year-old beagle mix with a big personality, a love for walks, and a strong belief that scrambled eggs and steak were absolutely meant to be shared. Like most beloved dogs, Ari had her routines and quirks. She loved going for car rides so she could watch the world pass by through the window, and at night she slept exactly where she believed she belonged… right between Kenna and Adam, curled up as the “little spoon.”

When families talk about legacy pet photos or pet memorial photography, those are the details that matter most. The tiny habits, the routines, the funny little preferences that made a dog feel like part of the family. Ari had eight years of those moments.

A Walk That Meant Something

When we started planning Ari’s dog end of life photo session, Kenna and Adam chose a small walking park near their home in Fishers, Indiana. It wasn’t a dramatic location or a scenic destination, but it didn’t need to be. It was simply a place Adam had walked Ari many times before, a quiet part of their routine that felt familiar and comfortable for her.

End of life pet photography sessions almost always move slowly and gently. The goal isn’t perfect posing or elaborate setups. Instead, we follow the dog’s pace, let them explore, and allow the family to simply spend time together. That afternoon looked a lot like any other walk.

Ari padded along beside Adam. Kenna knelt down beside her in the grass. There were quiet moments where they simply held her close, the kind of small interactions that happen every day with a beloved pet but suddenly feel much more meaningful when you know time is limited.

Pet Memorial Photography That Honors a Life

When families choose pet memorial photography or pet loss photography in Indiana, they’re usually navigating one of the hardest goodbyes they will ever face. Pets become woven into daily life in ways that are difficult to explain until they’re gone. They are there for the ordinary evenings, the morning routines, and the quiet moments that slowly build a life together.

Ari had been there for all of that.

Kenna later wrote something that perfectly captured how deeply Ari had been loved.

“A lot of people look at pets and just see them as that, but Ari was so much more to us. She was our ‘first child’, a true member of our family. Lauren has beautifully captured our family since 2020, most times with Ari being right in the center of it all. So it was a no brainer that she be the one to memorialize the love we have for her as we shared these final memories together.”

Those words say everything about why sessions like this matter. The photographs themselves are simple- but that’s what we needed, and the best way to hold onto Ari. A walk in the park. A dog beside the two people she loved most, walking a path she’s walked a hundred times before. Nothing elaborate, nothing staged.

Just love.

Remembering Ari

After Ari passed, Kenna shared a message that speaks to the quiet grief many pet owners recognize immediately.

“It's been a whole month of missing you. The void in our hearts still feels like a gut punch at times. Adam and I swear we still hear and see glimpses of you around the house all the time, but I know those are just little reminders that you're still with us in your own way. We love you, Nug.”

For Kenna and Adam, the photographs from that day are not just portraits. They are a small piece of the life they shared with Ari for eight years, a reminder of the walks, the routines, and the quiet companionship that only a dog can bring.

And Ari will always be part of that story.
