Urban Senior Photos for Guys | Fountain Square Indianapolis
I think senior guys usually show up expecting this to be painfully awkward, which honestly makes sense because most people hear “senior photos” and immediately picture stiff poses in a field somewhere while their mom says, “Okay, now smile, but natural.”
Meanwhile, this session looked a lot more like wandering around Fountain Square talking about music, coffee shops, graphic design, and whatever album happened to be playing inside Square Cat Vinyl at the moment.
Much better setup, if you ask me.
I’ve photographed the Vrtis family for years now, so getting to photograph this season of life felt especially cool. Somewhere along the way, the little kids you once photographed turn into teenagers talking about entrepreneurship, college plans, branding, and building businesses around hobbies they actually care about, and it catches you off guard a little.
This session fit him perfectly, though. Relaxed, creative, easygoing, quietly confident. Nothing about it needed to feel overly styled or complicated because his personality already carried the session naturally.
We spent the evening around Fountain Square in downtown Indianapolis, moving between side streets, coffee shops, record stores, and little corners of the neighborhood that already felt like places he’d actually spend time.
That’s usually the difference between a session feeling stiff and a session feeling like an actual memory.
Why Fountain Square Works So Well for Senior Photos for Guys
Fountain Square is one of my favorite spots for urban senior photos in Indianapolis because it gives people room to settle in naturally instead of feeling like they’re standing in one place trying to survive photos.
There’s always something happening around you downtown. Good light bouncing off old buildings, music drifting out of storefronts, people walking by, murals tucked between alleyways, coffee shops to duck into for a few minutes. The whole area has enough movement and texture that sessions stop feeling overly posed almost immediately.
That helps a ton with senior guys especially.
A lot of teenage boys are not showing up excited to spend an hour posing for photos, which is fair. Most of them just don’t want to feel uncomfortable or overly staged. Walking around downtown gives them something real to interact with instead of hyper-focusing on the camera the entire time.
The second we started moving through Fountain Square, the session relaxed naturally. We weren’t trying to manufacture personality or force reactions. We were just letting the evening unfold a little while documenting this version of him before life changes again in a year.
And honestly, downtown Indianapolis really does half the work for you sometimes.
Square Cat Vinyl Was Easily One of My Favorite Parts
Including Square Cat Vinyl made the whole session feel personal right away.
Music has been a huge part of his life throughout high school. He collects vinyl, spent years working at his school’s radio station, and clearly feels at home in spaces like that. The second we walked into the record store, everything loosened up even more because it already felt familiar to him.
He was flipping through albums he actually cared about, talking music naturally, wandering through the aisles the same way he probably would on any normal afternoon downtown. That’s always the sweet spot during senior sessions.
The whole thing worked because nothing about it felt overly manufactured.
And visually, Square Cat is such a good location for Fountain Square senior photos. The warm lighting, stacks of records, old floors, album art everywhere- it all adds texture without distracting from the person you’re actually photographing.
It fit the mood of the session perfectly.
Senior Pictures for Boys Don’t Need to Feel So Overdone
I think parents are usually more nervous about senior photos for guys than the guys themselves.
Everybody worries their son is going to hate taking photos or look uncomfortable the entire time. But most of the time, teenage boys relax pretty quickly once the session stops feeling like a performance.
That’s why I care a lot more about building sessions around personality than trying to recreate trendy poses floating around Pinterest.
The location matters.
The energy matters.
The conversation matters.
When a senior already feels comfortable in the environment, confidence shows up naturally without needing to force it.
This session never felt like we were trying too hard to create a certain image. He’s already creative and interesting without needing extra layers added on top of it. You could see it in the way he moved through the city, the way he talked about music and design, the way he settled into the session once we started walking around instead of standing still.
That kind of ease photographs really well because it actually feels believable.
One of the Best Parts of Photographing Families for Years
One of my favorite things about this job is getting to photograph families through completely different seasons of life.
You meet families when the kids are little, then one day you’re suddenly photographing senior sessions and having conversations about college majors, future careers, and what adulthood might start looking like in another year or two.
During this session, we ended up talking a lot about graphic design, entrepreneurship, branding, music, and all the random in-between conversations that happen naturally when you spend an evening walking around downtown with somebody instead of forcing them through nonstop poses.
Those are usually my favorite sessions anyway.
The ones where somebody actually looks like themselves in the photos.
Years from now, these images will probably remind him of more than just what he looked like during senior year. They’ll remind him of the music he loved, the places he spent time, the city he grew up around, and this weird in-between season where adulthood feels close enough to start picturing clearly for the first time.
