Two-dles and a Whole Lot of Personality | In-the-Box Two-Year Milestone Photos

Some milestone sessions are sweet and simple. Some are calm and cozy. And then there are the sessions that feel a little bit like joyful chaos in the very best way. Kellan’s “two-dles” milestone session landed firmly in that second category.

Kellan had just turned two, which is one of those ages where toddlers are equal parts hilarious, unpredictable, and full of personality. His mom, Kristen, told me ahead of time that he was currently obsessed with two things: Mickey Mouse and sports. She also mentioned that their four-year-old puppy Henry would be joining the fun, which immediately told me this session was probably going to be lively… and that’s exactly what two-year-old milestone photos should be.

Why Two-Year Milestone Photos Are So Much Fun

The first birthday gets a lot of attention in the photography world, with cake smash sessions and big celebrations, but two-year milestone sessions might secretly be even more entertaining. Two-year-olds are walking, running, climbing, laughing, and constantly discovering new things, which means their personalities are finally front and center.

At this age, the goal isn’t perfection or perfectly posed portraits. The goal is capturing the little quirks that make this stage so memorable: the giant toddler grin, the proud little stance, the way they move through the world with complete confidence and absolutely zero concern for what the adults are trying to accomplish.

Kellan brought all of that energy into his session.

In-the-Box Photos: The Perfect Setup for Toddler Personalities

If you’ve never seen an “in the box” photo session before, the concept is simple but incredibly fun. A child stands, sits, jumps, or explores inside a white box set, and each frame captures a different moment. Later, those images can be combined into a collage that tells the story of the session in one playful image.

For toddlers, this setup works beautifully because it gives them space to move around and interact with their surroundings, rather than feeling like they have to stand still and smile at the camera. It also creates a little stage where their personality can really shine.

Kellan treated the box like his own personal playground.

One minute he was tossing balloons into the air, the next he was inspecting Mickey Mouse decorations on the wall, and at one point he decided that bringing a hockey stick into the mix was a great idea. Which, honestly, it was.

A Two-Doodles Theme (Because Turning Two Deserves a Little Humor)

Kristen had mentioned ahead of time that the goal for this session was simple: keep it fun. We leaned into that idea by creating a playful “two-doodles” theme with Mickey Mouse elements, bright balloons, and plenty of room for Kellan to explore.

The decorations added color and personality without taking over the session, which meant Kellan was still the star of the show. Some frames captured him bouncing around with balloons, others showed him carefully inspecting the decorations, and a few moments involved Henry the puppy quietly observing the chaos like the world’s most patient big brother.

Those little interactions are the moments parents end up loving the most later on.

Including Pets in Milestone Photos

Henry, the family’s four-year-old puppy, absolutely deserved his place in this session.

Pets are such an important part of family life, especially for young kids, and family portraits with pets can add a layer of connection and storytelling that you simply can't recreate any other way.

Kellan and Henry clearly adore each other, and the way Henry calmly sat beside him in a few frames felt like the sweetest little snapshot of their relationship.

Plus, let’s be honest, toddlers and puppies together are pretty hard to beat.

Milestone Photography That Captures Personality

Sessions like Kellan’s are a perfect reminder that milestone photography doesn’t have to be overly styled or complicated to be meaningful. Sometimes the most memorable photos come from letting kids be exactly who they are in that moment.

At two years old, that means curiosity, laughter, a little bit of chaos, and the occasional completely unexpected moment that makes everyone laugh.

And those are exactly the moments parents want to remember later.

The toddler years move fast. One minute they’re learning to walk, and the next they’re running circles around the house, developing big opinions, and somehow growing into a whole little personality right in front of your eyes.

Milestone sessions like Kellan’s are all about capturing that stage exactly as it is, the laughter, the energy, the curiosity, and the beautifully imperfect moments that make your child uniquely them.
