How to Prepare For Laid Back At-Home Newborn Photos: The Lowe Family

If you’re anything like most new parents, you’ve probably wondered how on earth you’re supposed to “prepare” your home, your baby, and yourself for newborn photos… all while running on very little sleep. The truth is, you don’t need a picture-perfect house or a perfectly calm baby. The Lowe family’s in-home session is proof of that. And along the way, I’ll walk you through exactly how to prepare without overthinking it.

Meet the Lowe Family at Home

Before we get into the how-to side of preparing for newborn photos, let me introduce you to the Lowe family. Christine and Travis are the kind of parents who make you feel instantly at ease, and that tone carried through their entire session. Their family includes their 18-month-old son, Dominic, their beloved fur baby, Stanley, and now their newest little love, baby Verona. This season is full of those real-life newborn moments, slower pockets of time, toddler energy, and the kind of in-between sweetness you don’t fully appreciate until it’s already changing.

Preparing for Your At-Home Newborn Photos: The Power of Personalization

For new clients, the prep portion of at home newborn photos doesn't get more vital than the need for a thorough client questionnaire. The questionnaire comes in every client proposal, and helps give me insight as to your relationships, your hopes, your home, and what matters most to you during your session. Within the questionnaire, Christina shared their excitement for the future and the joy of envisioning family adventures with all four of them eagerly as they await the arrival of their newest family member. With a home birth on the horizon, the Lowe family embraces the uniqueness of their journey, cherishing every moment of this precious time. She helped give me great insight into their laid back personas, Dominic's fun loving personality, and what rooms are most important for them to work in.

Creating a Cozy Atmosphere for Newborn Photos: Tips for Setting the Perfect Scene

Part of what I love about capturing the early days of infancy in your family's home, is we have so much flexibility for where and what we capture together. It helps make each session unique. Most of the time, the main spaces we use in your home include the living room, parents bedroom, and the nursery, but all of this depends on light and the family's wishes.

In light of Christina's midwife's recommendation and her recent home birth, we carefully plan to capture their session primarily on the second floor of their home, where the family spends most of their time. This thoughtful consideration ensures both safety and comfort for the entire family and worked out beautifully. Their charming home, nestled in the heart of Indianapolis, provided the perfect backdrop for their newborn photography session. Each room exudes warmth and character, from the cozy living room with its navy blue walls to the nursery adorned in an orange creamsicle hue. With a preference for jewel-toned colors and prints, the Lowe family's style sets the stage for a laid back newborn session.

Authenticity over Posed Newborn Portraits

Posed, styled newborn photography is artwork unto itself, and very different from at-home lifestyle photography, which is my craft and where, to me, the heart of your home is showcased. If you, like the Lowe family, gravitate towards natural and unposed photography, these laid back at home newborn photos capture genuine connections rather than staged poses. You're in your most treasured place, your home. It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be yours.

The rest of the session will flow from that.

Styling Your Family for a Laid-Back, At-Home Newborn Session

The Lowes kept things simple in the best way with light, neutral sweaters and leggings that felt comfortable and true to them. Nothing stiff, nothing overthought. Just pieces they could move in, snuggle in, and actually live in during the session. Christina did such a great job considering the tones of her home alongside my general styling guidelines, like soft textures, lighter colors, and timeless patterns. When everything works together like that, the focus stays exactly where it should be… on connection, not outfits.

If you’re planning your own session, a good place to start is choosing a few neutral or muted tones, mixing in soft textures (like knits or linen), and avoiding anything too bold or distracting. The goal is for your photos to feel cohesive and calm, without looking overly styled. If you want a little more guidance, I break this down in more detail in this post on what to wear for lifestyle newborn photos, so you can feel confident pulling everything together without overthinking it.
