At-Home Christmas Pictures in Chatham Hills | Westfield Family Photographer

The Soukup family’s at-home Christmas pictures took place in their new home in Chatham Hills, a beautiful neighborhood in Westfield, Indiana. And this session felt like exactly what “Home for the Holidays” photos should be: relaxed, personal, cozy, and centered around the things their family actually does together this time of year. I’ve been photographing the Soukup family since Calvin’s first birthday, and now somehow he is almost six, living in a new house, decorating the Christmas tree, playing Uno at the dining table, snuggling on the couch, and sitting on the stairs with Hobbes like he has been doing this whole growing-up thing behind everyone’s back.

Rude, honestly.

Sara and Tim wanted their holiday photos to capture this new season in their new home. They had recently built their house in Chatham Hills, and instead of only doing traditional Christmas portraits, they wanted a mix of holiday moments and everyday family photos. A few are outside on the front porch. A few cozy ones on the couch. Some with Calvin. Some with Penny and Stella, their two dogs. Some are decorating the tree. Maybe a little Uno. Maybe a little hot cocoa or cookies. Mostly, they wanted photos that felt like this season of life in the home they are building together.

That is exactly why I love at-home Christmas pictures. The setting already means something.

At Home Christmas Pictures in Chatham Hills

For this session, we started outside on the front porch of their Chatham Hills home. Their house has such a beautiful, clean, modern farmhouse feel with white siding, warm wood beams, a black front door, rocking chairs, and simple holiday touches on the porch. It gave us a perfect way to include the new home without making the entire session feel like a real estate listing with children and dogs added for emotional support.

The front porch was also a great spot for a few classic family portraits. Sara, Tim, Calvin, Penny, and Stella all together on the steps felt like a perfect way to document this first holiday season in the new house. And yes, photographing two dogs with a kid is always a tiny circus with fur. Penny was pretty easygoing. Stella brought the mini goldendoodle energy, which is to say she had her own internal agenda and was not especially concerned about my shot list.

Honestly, fair.

At-home family photos in Westfield are especially meaningful when your home is part of the story. For the Soukups, Chatham Hills was not just a pretty backdrop. It was the place they had recently built, the place where Calvin is growing up, and the place where new holiday traditions are starting to take shape.

Home for the Holidays Photos in a New Westfield Home

This session was part holiday photos and part “look at this life we are making here.”

That is what made it feel so personal. Sara mentioned that they wanted to capture the new house and the new traditions that come with it. They had done family photos before, but this season felt different because the setting had changed. The house itself was part of the milestone.

Home for the Holidays photos are not just about the Christmas tree, although I do love a good tree moment. They are about the way your family actually lives during this season. The front porch you walk through every day. The couch where everyone piles together. The dining table where you play games. The staircase your kid sits on with his favorite stuffed animal. The tree you decorate while talking about where the ornaments came from.

Those are the details that make in-home Christmas photos feel different from a studio setup or an outdoor holiday mini. They are not just cute. They are specific.

And specific is usually where the good stuff lives.

Christmas Family Photos at Home with Real Traditions

One of the traditions Sara mentioned was decorating the Christmas tree together. Their family collects ornaments from trips and travels, so decorating the tree also becomes a way to remember different places they have been and moments they have shared.

I love that.

Holiday traditions do not have to be elaborate to photograph beautifully. Sometimes it is as simple as pulling out ornaments and telling the same stories again. The beach trip. The city you loved. The vacation where someone cried over sunscreen or ate something questionable or decided they were now a “museum person.” The ornament goes on the tree, and suddenly the tree is not just decorated. It is full of tiny little receipts from the life you have lived together.

For the Soukup family, we photographed Calvin helping with ornaments, the tree glowing in the living room, and the little train set running around the bottom. Those are the kinds of details that feel small now, but later they become the photos that make everyone say, “Remember when he loved that?”

That is the beauty of Christmas family photos at home. They do not have to be overly styled. They can include the things your family already loves: decorating the tree, watching holiday movies, playing games, snuggling on the couch, drinking hot cocoa, making cookies, or simply being together while the house feels a little more magical than usual.

Cozy Family Photos Without Leaving the House

One of the biggest perks of at-home Christmas pictures is that nobody has to leave the house.

No hauling everyone to a crowded holiday location. No hoping the weather cooperates. No packing half your home into a bag because someone might need snacks, socks, bribery chocolate, backup shoes, dog treats, and a deep emotional reset in the parking lot.

At home, everything is already there.

For the Soukup family, we were able to move easily from the front porch to the couch, then to the staircase, the living room, the Christmas tree, and the dining table. Their home gave us so much variety without needing to go anywhere. The gallery still had a full story, but the whole session stayed relaxed.

We did cozy couch photos, portraits on the stairs, family photos by the Christmas tree, Calvin with Hobbes, tree decorating, a few couple photos of Sara and Tim, and even a little Uno at the dining table. That mix matters because holiday family photos at home do not have to be only Christmas-themed. Some of my favorite images from this session are the ones that simply feel like them in their home.

The couch snuggles. The stair photos. The quiet parent-child moments. The dining table.

Those are the pieces that make in-home family photos feel less like a performance and more like a record of real life, just cleaned up enough that nobody is stepping over a laundry basket in the background.

Including Dogs in At-Home Family Pictures

Penny and Stella were part of this session too, which felt right because pets are absolutely part of the family.

Including dogs in at-home family pictures can be so much easier than bringing them to an outdoor location. They are already in their own space; you can give them breaks, and if one dog decides sitting still is a concept she does not personally support, we can work around it.

The front porch was the perfect spot to include both dogs in the family photos. They added personality without needing to be in every single frame. That is usually the best approach with pets: we get the photos with them early, let them wander or rest when needed, and then keep going with the rest of the session.

At-home sessions make that possible.

Penny and Stella gave the porch portraits that full-family feeling, and then we could move inside and focus on Calvin, the Christmas tree, and the quieter family moments. It felt natural, not forced.

And honestly, if your dog has ever photobombed a sentimental family moment, congratulations. That is just family photography with pets doing what it was born to do.

Photographing Calvin from First Birthday to Almost Six

One of my favorite parts of this session was realizing how long I have been photographing this family.

I photographed Calvin’s first birthday photos, and now he is almost six. That kind of thing will make a photographer emotionally unwell if she thinks about it for too long.

There is something really special about photographing the same family through different seasons. The first birthday stage, the toddler stage, the preschool years, the almost-kindergarten-big-kid era. You start to see the threads that stay the same even as everything else changes.

For Calvin, this session included so many pieces of who he is right now. Sitting on the front porch. Snuggling with his parents. Holding Hobbes on the stairs. Hanging ornaments on the tree. Playing with the Christmas train. Sitting at the table for Uno. These are not just holiday photos. They are little markers of his almost-six-year-old life.

That is why finding a photographer you trust over time can make such a difference. When someone has photographed your family before, they already know a little bit of your rhythm. Your kid is not starting from scratch with a stranger. Your family does not have to relearn the whole process every time. There is comfort in that.

If you are thinking through what matters most when hiring someone to photograph your family, I have a post about choosing the right family photographer that can help.

Planning Your Own At Home Christmas Pictures in Westfield

If you are planning your own at home Christmas pictures in Westfield, Chatham Hills, Carmel, or anywhere around Central Indiana, the best place to start is with the pieces of your holiday season that already feel like your family.

You do not need to turn your house into a showroom. You do not need a perfectly styled cocoa bar unless you actually love a perfectly styled cocoa bar, in which case please live your truth. You just need a few meaningful places or activities that help tell the story of this season.

That might be decorating the tree, reading holiday books, baking cookies, playing a favorite game, snuggling on the couch, hanging stockings, including pets, or taking a few photos on your front porch. It might be less holiday-themed too, especially if you want your gallery to feel useful beyond December. That is one reason I loved the Soukup session so much. It included Christmas details, but it also included timeless family photos in the home they love.

For families in Chatham Hills and Westfield, in-home Christmas photos are a beautiful way to document your family without needing to leave the place where so many of your real memories are already happening.

If you are not sure whether your home would photograph well, I promise it probably has more possibility than you think. Good light, connection, and meaningful spaces matter more than having every corner perfectly finished. I also have a post about why your home is already a beautiful place for family photos if you need a little extra convincing.

For the Soukup family, their Home for the Holidays photos were about a new house, familiar traditions, Calvin growing up, two beloved dogs, and the quiet excitement of settling into a new chapter together.
